Community Based Public Art -
Sacred Works
"The voice of the community is in the work..."
The mission of Jay’s community based public artwork is to ignite community engagement, empowerment, and action through art. The art is of, and by, the community, and transforms people and places. Participants come together as a group--a community-- and through Jay’s unique process discover their personal innate creative ability, the validity of ideas of all individuals, the power of collaboration with others, and a passion for the beauty of the sacred. (See the short documentary and Sacred Works categories below)
Jay's public artwork is "not about one's ability to paint, but one's ability to think". The workshop process brings together a range of ages, cultures, and backgrounds that results in the creation of innovative, arresting, and quality art. Exhibited in a folk art style, the narratives conveyed are easily understood by both participants and audience. Workshop members can easily discern that their own ideas and contributions are vitally intrinsic to, and recognizable within, the final artwork. The process of team building and promoting understanding is as important as the end product.
Jay has been the lead artist for over fifty public art installations.
Mr. Wolf Schlossberg - Cohen has a special style of energizing people who have little or no art experience in a fun, exiting, and communal way. He also has a unique talent in incorporating the voice and imagery of participants into the final work, giving them full ownership and pride in artwork that is far beyond their expectations. One participant described the experience well - “deep, profound, and lasting". People who work with Jay continually express how they absolutely loved the process, that they witnessed a new positive energy accompanying hands-on activity, and how everyone is affected by transformation of space and place by works that they themselves created.
